Kirkenes sits at the far northeastern edge of Norway, just a few kilometers from the Russian border and not far from Finland. This Arctic town offers travelers a perspective they won’t find anywhere else in the country. With street signs in both Norwegian and Russian, and a local history shaped by war, trade, and shifting borders, Kirkenes has long stood at the crossroads of cultures.
For those drawn to Arctic landscapes, Kirkenes offers year-round access to raw, remote surroundings. In winter, visitors can ride snowmobiles through frozen valleys, join king crab safaris on the ice, or stay overnight at the Snowhotel, where every room is carved from snow and lit with soft LED light. The Snowhotel is rebuilt each year with new sculptures, and guests sleep in thermal sleeping bags on ice beds layered with reindeer hides. In summer, the landscape transforms completely as the midnight sun lights up fjords, tundra trails open up for hiking, and the Barents Sea becomes accessible for boat trips to isolated fishing villages.
